Project summary

This project is about to redesign the website for Yong Sheng Confectionery Sdn. Bhd. I am given 7 weeks to create no less than 8HTML pages, fully functional website that shows at least 3levels of content structure. Website must remain useful and compelling to the needs of both clients and the audience. I do not need to rebrand the whole company website, no need new info. But to enhance the overall design to attract more users and consumers. As well as promote this leading confectionery manufacturers in the southern region of Malaysia to everyone.

Current Site’s Analysis Goals

The current client’s website was done in 2008.I think it’s time to change for a better and more interesting layout to attract more people although some of the info like the coming dragon boat festival that have the rice dumplings is updated. The website should actually help the company to gain more consumers, tell the public about their uniqueness. However, the overall website looks normal that is not impactful enough for people that drop by the website. To increase hit rate, I found out that some areas can be improved .

First of all, I think it’s not necessary to insert so many images in the mainpage. It will somehow look “cheap” because of the overall colour mood is striking too. The way the images linked to each other is kinda confusing too.And the banner on the right hand side is too big and it exists in almost every pages.

To improve this, I will categorized the image under products, and under products, maybe will be divided into some small categories as well, like festive products, hampers, etc.

For the about page, the info is too lengthy. Maybe I can make them into different pages, like each subtitle is a page under the About page.Besides, the navigators can be more interesting too, maybe more rollover effect than the current ones.

Another thing is the outlet page, it stated that no available outlets now. But the page is there, it’s definitely not necessary. Besides, actually there are some outlets of the company in Johor and Melacca, but the info is under Contact page. When I first log in to this website, I am lost too, and confused. Thus,it has to be changed and improved so that it will be more convenient especially for first timer users.

I have collected the brochure from the Melacca branch. What I notice is the brochure is not bad, it gives me a kinda high class and elegant feeling, as well as the packaging. Thus, I might use the dark brown and some sort of golden colour feeling in the website, to make it look more high class and different from other brands. Also, some Chinese cultural elements will be added into the page, to enhance the overall feeling and mood. Another point is, maybe the website can provide membership to the customers, give them discounts on certain amount of purchase.

Client’s analysis

Yong Sheng Confectionery Sdn. Bhd. was established in 1952 in Muar, Johor. Today, they are one of the leading confectionery manufacturers in the southern region of Malaysia that focuses in the production of quality wife cakes, moon cakes, cookies, pastries and hampers.

Their factory, Tatawa Industries Sdn. Bhd. which specializes in soft-filled cookies and chocolates was founded in 1992. At the end of 1994, Tatawa Industries Sdn. Bhd. has captured the international and market coverage such as Japan, Europe, Middle East and Asia.

In Yong Sheng Confectionery Sdn. Bhd., their products strive on the intrinsic Chinese culture that blends with South East Asia delicious delicacies. They use not only finest ingredients to produce their products but exquisite and natural resources that hail from our environment. They are continuously upgrading their expertise in areas such as product development, design and packing to meet the ever-increasing and changing consumer market demand. To ensure all consumers have the best valued products, they have invested substantially in both equipment and manpower.

Besides,they also provide many varieties and quality hampers which are offered at favorable prices to their customers across the region. Due to the increasing demand of the gift giving society, which is part of our culture in Malaysia, they offer to cater the different types of hampers according to our customers’ needs such as special occasions and during festive seasons.

Yong Sheng Gift Shops were launched to sell and promote their products. Professional and dedicated teams were set up to provide their friendly service and share their knowledge on the products with their customers. However, their shop at Jalan Sayang, Muar remains our foremost outlet in Malaysia.

The unique selling point of Yong Sheng Confectionery Sdn. Bhd is that the company has more than 50 years of experience in the confectionery field.They provide plenty kinds of products, be it festive products, or any other Malaysian Chinese traditional cookies.Compare to other competitors, Yong Sheng provide more choices of Chinese delicacies for customers.

Yong Sheng’s products are suitable for all kinds of customers that would love to try Chinese cookies, the prices are affordable too. Also, with the beautiful design of the packaging, it’s quite worth it. In addition, the company emphasize on the Malaysian Chinese culture, which means,Chinese culture mix with South East Asia culture, then can attract more customers,either local , or overseas.

Short & Long-term Site Goals

The website is supposed to increase the business value, attract more people and let us know more about the products that they provided. The updates and images are interesting in the website, but the layout is quite normal, do not give much impact to the customers. Besides, I think some info in the website is quite confusing, in terms of categorizing.

Thus,for a long-term site goals, I think it is necessary to create a more attractive and clear web page layout. However, it’s just enhancing the design of the page and keep the contents there. So, I will design the layout, make it look more elegant and high class, to suit its packaging and brand as well. Also the fusion of Chinese and South East Asia culture elements. The company could also think of creating membership discount for customers, and collecting database from them, in order to deliver the certain latest updates to them.

For short-term goals, maybe the company can state out some special offer promotions for certain products.

Target audience

This website is targeted to those that love Malaysian Chinese traditional confectionery. It is useful for the users with the info provided, so that they can know more about the company’s products and prices before they need to go to the shop and purchase from there. Thus, to make sure the users log in often to the website, a better layout design and thoughtful arrangement would improve the situation. They can even provide newsletter service fortnightly and monthly.

Competitor’s Analysis

One of the company’s competitor is Oversea Corporation. The website has some flash in the beginning to make it more lively. Even the logo in the header has some kind of effect too.However, it doesn’t show the prices of the products. For this company, other than mooncakes and some other cookies, they do have restaurants for their delicacies too. The webpage layout is not that interesting and special. But overall it’s clean and provides some extra info than Yong Sheng Sdn. Bhd.

Secondly,it’s Kum Lun Tai.Same thing, they have flash in the entering page, although it’s not that interesting too, but at least it isn’t that static. This website does not even put description and price for almost all their products.And the western girl image in the header,does not give people an oriental feeling. By the way, the company has some other products than Chinese cookies, that can attract more buyers. A bad thing bout this website is that,there are a few broken links.

Another competitor is Baker’s Cottage.What I notice is, these competitors has an enter page.This company basically only use 2 main colours,their corporate colours to design the layout.It’s very simple and the navigators are not interesting as well, even hard to read.Same thing occurs,there are some broken links.But good thing is they organize some activities for people to join.

Jo here.. good analysis. Can also consider tourist as your target audience, just like when tourist visit Penang, a must to buy Tau Sar Peah. Can Yong Sheng be the same for tourist visiting Johor? Provide some cultural info.
